Provenance Note I have bought, catalogued and sold old books in Vienna for 21 years, the last 9 as owner of my own shop on Bäckerstraße. I handle roughly 1,400 volumes a year, from incunabula to Secession-era bindings, and I write every catalogue entry myself. Each plate below marks one era of that career. Collectors keep telling me to digitise faster; I keep telling them the ledger has never once crashed.

Senior Cataloguer, Rare Books

Dorotheum-Gasse Auktionshaus Brenner · Vienna
  • Described 6 auction sales a year, around 520 lots each; my collations cut post-sale returns from 4.1% to 0.9%.
  • Identified an unrecorded variant of a 1687 Vienna imprint that sold at 14x its low estimate (€42,000).
  • Trained 3 junior cataloguers in collation, paper dating and provenance research.

Assistant Bookseller

Buchhandlung Weidinger & Sohn · Salzburg

Here I learned the trade from the shelf up: dusting, collating, packing, pricing. I ran the shop's first mail-order list, which grew from 60 to 700 subscribers in 3 years, and handled shipping for about 2,100 parcels a year without losing one to customs. On Saturdays I minded the till alone and sold my first Aldine, slightly under-priced, a mistake Herr Weidinger mentioned weekly for two years.
